Why Networking Is Important
Why networking is important: You’ve been networking your whole life—even if you didn’t realize it.
First, when people think of networking, they often picture stiff conversations, name tags, and business cards. But most of the meaningful connections in my life happened far from conference rooms or LinkedIn messages. Networking, at its core, is simply relationship-building.
And it’s something we’ve all been doing for decades.
In this post, I’m sharing the real meaning of networking, personal stories from my own journey, and why building a personal brand starts offline.

Networking Isn’t What You Think It Is
When I first heard the term “networking,” I immediately pictured something formal. My thoughts? Networking is forced and uncomfortable. That’s what many people believe, and I used to feel the same way.
But I’ve come to understand that networking isn’t a strategy—it’s a lifelong habit.
Take this: when I launched my podcast, one of my very first reviews came from my best friend from kindergarten. I’m 47 now. That’s nearly four decades of connection, and not once did we call it “networking.”
Yet, that’s exactly what it was. It was built through trust, consistency, and shared experience. No pitch. No agenda. Just real support.
Personal Branding Is Built in the In-Between Moments
Years ago, my brother took a networking class in college. I laughed at him for it. I didn’t get it at the time. Why would anyone need a class to learn how to talk to people?
Now I understand.
Networking isn’t just about conversation. It’s about being memorable, generous, and respectful. It’s built slowly, through the ways you treat others behind the scenes.
Last week, I attended an event. Not everything went smoothly. But what stood out most was the outpouring of support. People came up to thank me, to tell me I’d impacted them. That moment reminded me—your reputation is always being built. Whether you realize it or not.
That’s networking. The kind that matters.
Why This Matters for Your Brand
If you’re building a personal brand, you already know that visibility matters. But many people focus only on how they show up online. While social media helps, you build your real brand when no one’s watching.
It happens:
- When someone mentions your name in a room you’re not in
- When a client refers you to their best friend
- When your old teacher, coach, or colleague cheers you on without being asked
You can’t buy these moments. You can’t manufacture them. But you can earn them.
Quick Takeaways on Real Networking
Let’s break it down. Here’s what I’ve learned:
- You’ve been networking your whole life. Every connection counts, even the ones from childhood.
- Your brand is your behavior. People remember how you made them feel, not just what you said.
- Reputation is your greatest asset. It’s being built in the background of every interaction.
- Be generous. Help people without keeping score. It will come back around—often when you least expect it.
Conclusion: You’re Already Doing It – Why Networking is Important
Finally, networking doesn’t have to feel fake. Most of the time, it’s happening naturally. Every coffee shop chat, or every supportive DM. Even every genuine thank you.
So today, take five minutes and reach out to someone. Not to pitch. Not to sell. Just because they’ve been on your mind.
That’s how real networking works. That’s how you build a personal brand.
