Transition from Photographer to Educator
Transition from Photographer to Educator: My Journey into Teaching Photography
Life often leads us in unexpected directions. My transition from photographer to educator was not something I planned, but every step along the way prepared me for it. After years of capturing high school seniors, businesses, and personal brands, I discovered that sharing my knowledge brought just as much joy as taking photos.
During Covid, photography sessions came to a halt. With in-person work on hold, I realized that if I didn’t put myself out there in a new way, my business wouldn’t survive. Despite never recording myself before, I took a leap and created a short YouTube video offering educational advice on lighting. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a start.
That one video led to something bigger. Soon, I found myself teaching photography over Zoom, connecting with people eager to improve their skills. Those virtual sessions opened doors I hadn’t expected, leading to in-person teaching opportunities once the world reopened.
Later, I stepped into a new role as an online influencer, helping promote a billion-dollar brand while caring for my mom during her cancer treatment. During that time, many influencers sought my advice on how to look their best on camera. Helping them gain confidence pushed me further toward education. What started as a way to survive during a difficult time became something much more—a passion for teaching photography.
Seeing others light up when they learned how to pose better, use natural light, or finally feel comfortable in front of the camera showed me that educating others was just as fulfilling as capturing images myself.

From Film to Digital: My Photography Journey
Photography first captured my attention in my small-town darkroom. The process of developing film felt magical, and I knew I had found something special. In college, I refined my skills and earned a degree in photography.
Years later, my business in Austin, Texas, focused on portraits. Every session deepened my understanding of light, posing, and capturing authentic moments. However, I felt drawn to something more—helping others create their own images.
Finding Joy in Teaching Photography
While working with clients, I often taught them how to feel comfortable in front of the camera. Many felt nervous, unsure of how to pose or use light effectively. Over time, I realized that teaching these skills brought me as much satisfaction as delivering their final portraits.
Mentoring other photographers became a natural extension of my work. Sharing what I had learned over decades in the industry allowed me to help more people beyond my one-on-one sessions. Teaching photography soon became my new passion. Don’t worry, I still LOVE being behind the camera to capture your true self.
The Rewarding Connection of Photography Education
Teaching photography goes beyond technical skills. It’s about helping others build confidence, develop their style, and capture meaningful moments. Seeing students improve, experiment, and believe in their abilities has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.
This realization led me to create resources like the Natural Light Cheat Sheet and start to develop my Mastering Natural Light Course. With these tools, photographers can learn to create stunning images using simple techniques.
Why Continuous Learning Matters for Photographers
Photography constantly evolves. New techniques, styles, and trends emerge every year. Ongoing education is essential for any photographer wanting to grow and stay relevant.
Teaching has strengthened my own skills while allowing me to give back to the photography community. Whether someone is just starting or refining their craft, learning never stops.
