How to Display Family Photos on the Wall

How to display family photos on the wall is a question I am often asked as an Austin family photographer. I personally love this question! As a full-service family portrait photographer, it’s my job to help make your life easier.

Sometimes, clients have a general idea of what they want on their walls but aren’t sure how to implement, or are seeking my guidance as an expert. Either way, we can work together to make this happen.

This goes hand in hand with why you would hire a professional in the first place.

I have software that allows me to show you how the images from your portrait session will look on your own walls.  I can scale the images to show what size works best, best frame options for canvas or framed images, a single image or a wall gallery, and more.

By doing things this way, you can feel confident in your selections.

I always recommend the pre-session consultation in your home for this reason. Together we can look at the walls and decide the best place for the wall portraits and you can start dreaming of your new walls right away. However, if you would rather do this step yourself, it’s easy.

First, photograph your walls and send me the images prior to your ordering appointment so I can design a few samples for you.

To do this, tape a standard sheet of paper (8.5×11”) to the wall.  This helps get the proper dimensions so the photo sizes are scaled properly.

Next, use your phone to take a picture of the wall as straight on as possible in a horizontal orientation. To do this, step back as far as you can.  Include furniture, windows, or doorways for size reference.

Continue this process for any wall you may be thinking of using. And, finally, just email me the images.

As a matter of fact, the below video shows exactly how we implemented the above together. We met in my clients home and took pictures of the wall she had in mind. By doing this, I was able to show her exactly what her final wall would look like. It was a success! I even helped with installation. Full service means full service.

First, decide if you want one big statement piece, or smaller pieces. A statement piece creates an impact! Think of this as your over the fireplace piece. The center of attention. Below, this beautiful family and I met up at Bull Creek Park to create this gorgeous statement piece.

Equally important, smaller pieces that when combined, tell your family story. The family below just moved into their new home and wanted a more relaxed session in their new backyard. Backyard family photos is definitely a favorite.
