Fear vs Disappointment
Fear vs Disappointment: The Real Reason You’re Not Showing Up Online
I want to unpack the difference between fear vs disappointment and why recognizing it can change everything.

Naming What’s Really Holding You Back: Fear vs Disappointment
Most people say it’s fear that keeps them from showing up. But for many of us, that’s not quite it.
What I’ve seen, and personally experienced, is something deeper. It’s not just fear. It’s disappointment.
When Fear Isn’t the Real Problem
You’ve probably heard this before: “You’re just scared to be seen.” I used to believe that too.
But then I noticed something strange.
I wasn’t scared of being visible. But, I was scared of trying again and feeling ignored. I had already shown up before and had launched something. I shared my face. Told my story. And when nothing really happened? It left a mark.
That feeling wasn’t fear. It was the sting of being disappointed. And when that happens enough times, showing up starts to feel like a risk you can’t afford.
It’s not just a mindset block. It’s a wound.
How Disappointment Hides in Plain Sight
Disappointment doesn’t always show up as tears or dramatic failure. It’s subtle.
It often looks like:
- Procrastination
- Perfectionism
- Saying “I’m not ready yet”
- Avoiding visibility altogether
And the truth? It’s your brain trying to protect you from more pain.
I’ve pulled back before, not because I didn’t have something to say, but because I wasn’t sure I could handle silence again. That’s what makes disappointment so sneaky. It convinces you that playing small is safer.
Reframing the Fear vs Disappointment Mindset
Here’s what helped me move through it, and what might help you too.
1. Name It Out Loud
Don’t call it fear if it’s not. Say, “This is disappointment.” It shifts how you relate to it.
2. Ask Yourself What You’re Really Afraid Of
Often, it’s not failure. It’s being misunderstood. Or it’s silence. Or it’s feeling invisible.
That awareness helps you separate emotion from truth.
3. Take One Small Step on Purpose
Not something big. Not something perfect. Just one small act of visibility. A post. A video. An email.
It’s a way to prove to yourself that you can show up and survive it.
When You Feel Invisible, You’re Not Alone
If this hits close to home, I want you to know this: you’re not broken. Disappointment doesn’t mean stop. It means pause, reflect, and keep going.
I’ve had to rebuild that trust in myself more than once. I still do.
And every time I take a small step, I remember that the people who are meant to see me will.
Final Thoughts: Fear vs Disappointment
In conclusion, the next time you hesitate to show up, ask yourself this:
Is it fear… or is it disappointment?
Knowing the difference is powerful. Because once you name it, you can move through it. And when you do? That’s where growth begins.
Let’s stop letting old wounds keep us from new wins.
