Burnout is Real
Burnout Is Real: How to Keep Showing Up When You’re Exhausted
Burnout is real, and it doesn’t always look like lying flat on the floor in tears. Sometimes, it’s showing up anyway—smiling, working, creating—and feeling drained to the bone by the time you show up. However, you find a way to do it anyway, even if it’s from your couch.
I just lived through that kind of week. A week where I had to stay on the couch and just take care of me. I’m finally coming out the other end, but, burnout is REAL. Here’s a “life lately” update because I really am bad at sharing all that goes on.
When You’re Running on Empty: Burnout is Real
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been traveling across Texas for sessions. I’ve photographed six incredible people in different cities, poured my energy into making each one feel confident, and made sure they had the best experience possible. I drove from Austin to Corpus Christi to photograph my high school best friend’s son’s senior pictures. Then, I flew up to Lubbock, Texas to photographer an incredible young lady’s Texas Tech graduations portraits. I had 3 studio headshot sessions here in the Austin area, and one at home 9 month old session. Needless to say, I am exhausted.

The kind of tired that brings you down. The kind that makes you question everything, including whether you can keep going.
This isn’t new for high achievers, especially those who serve others in their work. If you’re someone who puts heart into what you do, burnout creeps in quietly. You keep saying yes, you keep delivering, and you keep showing up.
Until your body says, “Not today.”

Not Everyone Will See It
Here’s a hard truth: not everyone will see what you’re carrying. Not everyone will support you and what you are doing. Sometimes, not always, the people you love, and the ones who say they love you, won’t show up for your business, or you, at least not publicly. But strangers? They’ll share your work, buy your offers, and cheer you on like they’ve known you forever. Support doesn’t always come from where you expect it. And that’s okay. It’s weird, and it will make you question yourself, but, it’s ok.
They won’t know how long you drove, how late you stayed up, or how hard you tried to make something perfect. They may not value the energy, the emotional labor, or the creative brainpower behind what you do.
That part stings. Especially when you care so much.
But the good news? Some people do see it.
Show Up for the Right People, especially those who support you and know that burnout is real
I remind myself to keep showing up—not for everyone, but for the ones who matter.
For the client who says, “I’ve never felt so confident” or “OMG, I love this.”
Or for the woman who finally sees her worth in a photo.
And for the person who says, “You made me feel seen.”
That’s who I show up for. And that includes me.

You Don’t Have to Earn Rest
One of the biggest lessons I’ve had to learn is this:
You don’t need to crash to deserve a break.
Rest isn’t earned through exhaustion. It’s a part of doing the work well. It allows you to keep doing what you love without losing yourself in the process.
And yet, so many of us push past the signs. We say, “Just one more thing,” until we’re completely depleted.
The truth is, burnout doesn’t wait for your permission.
So instead of powering through, I’m giving myself space. Space to slow down, space to breathe, and space to be human.
This Is Your Reminder
If you’ve been feeling the weight too, this post is your permission slip.
You can still care deeply and take a step back.
And, you can still love your work and need rest.
You can still be strong and tired at the same time.
Burnout is real. But it doesn’t have to define your story.
Show up when it matters. And when it doesn’t? Let yourself rest.
Final Thoughts on Burnout is Real
You’re allowed to protect your peace, and you’re allowed to say no without explaining.
You’re allowed to take care of yourself the way you take care of others. And most importantly, you’re allowed to come back when you feel ready.
The world can wait. Your clients will understand. And the ones who truly value you? They’ll still be here.
