Bridging the Confidence Gap: Empowering Women to Overcome Self-Doubt

Bridging the Confidence Gap: Have you ever felt held back by self-doubt, even though you’re fully capable? If so, you’re likely experiencing the confidence gap for women. The confidence gap is something I’ve personally battled and overcome. Now, I’m sharing exactly how you can overcome it too.

What Is the Confidence Gap?

Simply put, the confidence gap is when women underestimate their own abilities and qualifications. It shows up in situations where we hesitate to speak up or decline opportunities. I’ve seen this repeatedly, both in my own life and in many women I’ve mentored.

For instance, early in my career in politics, I was often the youngest person—and frequently the only woman—in important meetings. Even with my education and skills, I often found myself silent. Internal doubts whispered loudly in my mind:

  • They’ll think I’m too young.
  • They won’t take me seriously.
  • What if I embarrass myself?

But here’s the thing. One day I noticed my male colleagues confidently offering ideas, even ones less developed than mine. That realization changed everything for me. They weren’t more qualified; they simply didn’t second-guess themselves as often.

From that moment, bridging my own confidence gap became essential.

Why Women Experience the Confidence Gap

To overcome the confidence gap, first we need to understand what’s causing it. Here are three common reasons I’ve discovered through research and experience:

1. The Perfectionism Trap

Many women believe they must meet every single qualification before applying or speaking up. Research backs this up: men typically apply for opportunities if they meet about 60% of the criteria, while women wait until they meet 100%. I’ve personally struggled with this trap, but learning to move forward despite imperfections has helped tremendously.

2. Societal Conditioning

From an early age, girls often learn to be polite, agreeable, and humble. While these traits are valuable, they’re also limiting if taken too far. We’re often subtly conditioned not to stand out or appear overly ambitious. Breaking away from these expectations has been crucial in my journey toward confidence.

3. Fear of Judgment

Many of the women I’ve worked with express fear of judgment. Women, especially in male-dominated fields, often hesitate because they’re afraid of criticism or negative labels. This fear once prevented me from showing up fully too, but I’ve learned how to face it head-on.

How to Overcome the Confidence Gap for Women

Knowing what’s holding you back is the first step, but action matters most. Here are practical strategies I’ve successfully used to bridge my confidence gap:

Reframe Your Inner Dialogue

Changing how you talk to yourself can shift your entire mindset. Instead of thinking, “I can’t do this,” start saying, “I’ll try.” When doubts creep in, directly challenge those thoughts. For instance, I’ve learned to stop and say aloud, “I’m exactly where I should be,” and this has significantly quieted my inner critic.

Lean into Discomfort Intentionally

Confidence grows quickly when we intentionally step into uncomfortable situations. I was terrified when I first posted videos online. I worried nobody would watch, or worse, they’d judge me harshly. But when I finally did it, nothing bad happened. Instead, my confidence skyrocketed. Now I advise women to practice discomfort deliberately and consistently.

Celebrate Small Wins

Every courageous step you take deserves recognition. Small wins matter greatly because they build momentum. Did you finally speak up in a meeting or post a selfie confidently? Celebrate it. Positive reinforcement rewires your brain to associate courage with success.

Build Your Confidence Squad

Surround yourself with people who genuinely lift you up. Having mentors and supportive friends made a huge difference for me. I can’t stress enough the power of having a strong network. Confidence grows strongest when it’s nurtured by people who truly believe in you.

Taking Action Today

Overcoming the confidence gap won’t happen overnight, but small actions today create big results tomorrow. I encourage you right now to:

  • Post authentically online.
  • Speak up during your next meeting.
  • Reach out to someone you’ve hesitated to contact.

Once you do, message me or tag me on social media. I’ll happily celebrate this step forward with you.
